Position Title:                         Pastoral Care Worker

The Work Area:

The University of Canberra has a vibrant multi faith Spiritual Meeting Place.  The University is a community which reflects needs in the personal, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions of life. The Spiritual Meeting Place provides professional, accountable, holistic pastoral care for students and staff, sensitive to the context of the University of Canberra.   Up to date information about the area is contained on the SMP website www.canberra.edu.au/spiritplace .

Position Purpose:

In general the SMP aims to:
a) Assist students and staff in their personal growth
b) Strengthen the sense of community at University of Canberra
c) Enrich the quality of life within University of Canberra.

 

The primary purpose of this position is to nurture individuals and build community.

The position requires working closely and in cooperation with other team members. This will include the undertaking of designated functions required by specific sectors of the University community on or off campus e.g. multi-faith events, promoting harmony, orientation and commencement activities.

 

Duties:

Initially duties required of this position may include:

a) To be a pastoral carer to members of the community using all the resources available, and especially the spiritual and tangible resources of their professional community, to attend to the members needs and to assist in their personal development.

b) To encourage development of a holistic approach to faith and pastoral care within the university, in particular intellectual enquiry and debate.

d) To care for those who come with problems or needs.

e) To nurture and encourage the diverse communities at the University of Canberra promoting their cooperative interaction and spiritual development.

f) To encourage spiritual study, scholarship and learning and facilitate group meetings, camps and retreats, addresses by visiting speakers, films, debates and other activities.

g) To participate by any practicable means in the dialog on contemporary issues and to contribute to publications circulating in the tertiary world, according to interest and qualifications.

h) To act as catalysts promoting all that contributes to the welfare of the University community and seeking by timely word, encouragement, stimulation, example and any other practicable means to activate the latent resources of the community for the common good.

i) To act as agents for reconciliation, helping to promote understanding between groups which are apathetic to each other.

j) To speak out regarding matters of injustice and work with those who seek to bring about change for the common good.

k) To inform their professional bodies at large on matters related to the University.

 

Essential Selection Criteria

1.      Ability to work on a multi-disciplined team and work harmoniously and
flexibly with all members.

2.      Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate non-judgementally and effectively to people of different backgrounds and age groups.

3.      Ability to deal with pastoral/personal situations with discretion, integrity and confidentiality

4.      Ability to make sound judgements and refer when necessary.

5.      Knowledge of standard computer applications including email and word processing.

6.      Qualification in pastoral care, theology, religion or relevant experience in these fields.

7.      Ability to demonstrate an ongoing spiritual journey.

8.      Recognition by your professional community as a person of good standing by written reference.

9.      Willingness to maintain professional commitment to the position e.g. maintains regular hours, attend professional development, team meetings and University events.

 

Desirable Selection Criteria

10.  Experience working with people from different faith backgrounds,
understanding of cultural and religious differences.
