Clinical Pastoral Education is designed to introduce the experience of pastoral care, and the nature, scope and philosophy of pastoral care.
 
It includes:

The uniqueness of pastoral care
An initial look at the philosophy underlying pastoral care
Basic communication skills including empathy
Action/reflection processes
The relationship of thought, feeling and action
Group work with a practical component

Basic Course{ 400 hour unit }
 
The first 40 hours of basic level training are the equivalent of an introductory unit. The Basic unit comprises approximately 80 hours of group work, 10 hours of individual supervision, at least 150 hours placement visiting, plus reading and the preparation of presentations for supervision.
 
Basic units are offered in an extended form (over 20 weeks) with weekly groups from March/May to October/November, usually excluding school holidays, as well as in an intensive form (full time) over 10 weeks during summer. On some occasions times for extended units are varied to suit particular conditions.

Advanced Course{ 400 hour unit }
 
This is a 400 hour unit similar in outline to a basic unit, but with advanced didactics and supervision. A pre-requisite is completion of a Basis Training Unit in CPE. Trainees are asked to prepare a case study and an essay on an appropriate topic. On completion of the unit they are interviewed for assessment at an advanced level.
 
Training in the advanced program may be incorporated within existing basic courses.
